I have seen such a life
That consumes itself to light
To guide the probing men
Of this sullen earth.
I have heard a bird sing
Not only in the spring,
But on the hot summer noon
That moves the western wind
With its lustrous wings.
I have seen a blood-red rose
Of enduring hue
That blesses even the desolate life
With all its perfume.
I have met a sailor, never-dismayed
Who sees the roaring waves
Of the furious seas;
But stands perfect-poised
With his eyes glowing with hope.
I have seen such a youth
That burns the foes
With flaming fury, never-extinguished:
I have seen such lives.
