Seahorse | Mitchell Krockmalnik Grabois

My new wife’s profile pic
is a seahorse
Delicate, lightly floating
it suits her

For our half-year anniversary
she bought us matching ukuleles
the faces of a tiki gods burnt into their tops
The face of her god was not feminine
but more feminine than mine
which was fierce enough for a Stratocaster

I tried to look happy but she could tell I was faking it
I don’t do duets, I explained
Marriage is a duet she said
I know, I’m trying, but it goes against my basic nature

Soloing leads to the exhaustion of one’s soul
She tended to grow philosophical
as the night lengthened

She floated to the aquarium
and flipped its light on
stood and watched the tropical fish

while I was aware that I had fallen asleep
and was beginning to quietly snore
