Broken Wings (A Tribute to Nirbhaya) | Rrashima Swaarup Verma

With twinkling stars bright in my eyes,
A million songs my heart could sing
My dreams were like the open skies,
And I could conquer everything

Just like a bird with spirit free,
On wings of promises ahead
Each day was like a melody,
So many things, were still unsaid

Then came a dark and moonless night,
Risen from the ashes of sin
It seemed all would be lost tonight,
Monsters they were, I could not win

Desolate, deserted cries of pain,
The night it seemed was weeping too
And evil strikes, yes once again!
Before this fateful night is through

I could not even weep no more!
The anguish seemed too much to bear
My soul was dead much long before,
My life then gave way to despair

Oh, Mother dear, please let me go,
I cannot bear this agony!
Dear Father, why is your head bowed low?
I know you did your best for me

Oh, ask me how it feels to die,
So cruelly crushed beneath their feet!
My broken wings, I cannot fly!
And now my will, succumbs to defeat!

Tomorrow I will not see the day,
My tunes will die, my dreams will break
The winds have blown me far away,
And never again will I awake

I take with me my broken wings,
But leave behind a wailing heart
The songs that I will never sing,
So mercilessly torn apart!

Is this the end of hope for me?
Is it the end I ask of you?
The light of faith, will I not see?
Forever, as I bid adieu

Touchingly written, beautifully crafted a poem that goes beyond the power of words or rhyme. I used to believe poetry is dead but NO it isn’t, it still sometimes flow out from peoples’ pens as gleaming wet words that have the power to make you cry or smile. Long live poetry!!!!!!
