Silky slivers of newborn grass
caress horseshoe-patterned
pathways. Baby leaves nuzzle rosehips.
Bare berry bushes silently
tend pregnancies
of summer’s succulent bounty.
Downy foliage dapples light.
Legions of last year’s
brown bristly thistles
stand guard at water’s edge.
Swamp owls soundlessly
swoop and soar.
A lone fisherman tilts back
in battered metal and woven mesh
casting fine strands of filament
into the listless lake
Small insects perform
their silent ceremony.
The horizon undulates beneath
blankets of buckskin and emerald velvet
stitched together by poplar rows.
inviting the sun to surrender.
