I Ponder The Future | George Freek

(After Su Tung Po’s ‘Autumn’)

The summer’s lilies are gone.
They’ll never come back.
The autumn hyacinth
are also turning black.
A cardinal calls ‘Look at me’,
raising his arrogant head.
Perhaps he just grabbed a grub,
but he’ll also soon be dead.
I know beneath the ice
a river still flows,
but as I think of winter,
I lose all will. Time
is an intangible, but it can kill.
